Preparing for UPSC, BPSC and UPPCS Prelims Together: What Overlaps and What Does Not
BPSC Prelims on 25 October 2026, UPPCS Prelims on 6 December 2026 and UPSC Prelims on 23 May 2027 all fall within eight months. Here is how the three papers compare, what you can prepare once for all three, and what each needs on its own.

On this page
Many aspirants write more than one civil services exam in a year, and the next eight months make that natural: BPSC 72nd CCE Prelims on 25 October 2026 (tentative), UPPCS Prelims on 6 December 2026 and UPSC CSE Prelims on 23 May 2027. Preparing for all three is efficient if you understand exactly how the papers differ. It becomes wasteful if you treat them as one exam.
The three papers side by side
| Feature | BPSC 72nd CCE | UPPCS 2026 | UPSC CSE 2027 |

What you can prepare once
These areas are common to all three papers. Prepare them to UPSC depth and they will cover the state papers comfortably:
- Indian polity: the Constitution, institutions, local government and governance
- Modern Indian history and the national movement
- Indian and world geography, including maps
- Indian economy: basic concepts, the budget, banking and schemes
- Environment and ecology
- National and international current affairs
Prepare these well once and you only need to revise them before each exam.
What each exam needs on its own
BPSC
- Bihar special: history from ancient Magadha to the freedom struggle in Bihar, geography and rivers, the state economy, budget and economic survey, and Panchayati Raj and planning in Bihar
- General science at school level
- General mental ability, which is part of the General Studies paper
- Bihar current affairs for the last 12 to 15 months
UPPCS
- Uttar Pradesh special: history and culture, geography, economy, One District One Product, protected areas and state schemes
- General English and General Hindi up to Class 10 in CSAT, which UPSC’s CSAT does not have as separate sections
- UPPCS previous papers, because their style differs from UPSC’s even where the syllabus is the same
UPSC
- Precise conceptual knowledge for statement-based questions and "how many of the above are correct" formats
- Science and technology and international relations linked to current developments
- Art and culture in detail
- CSAT, which many candidates found tough in 2026
A combined calendar for the next eight months
| Period | Priority | Keep going alongside |
|---|---|---|
| 14 September to 24 October 2026 | BPSC Prelims: Bihar special and practice with BPSC papers | Daily current affairs, weekly CSAT |
| 26 October to 5 December 2026 | UPPCS Prelims: UP special, CSAT with English and Hindi, UPPCS papers | Revision of the common subjects |
| 7 December 2026 to February 2027 | UPSC foundation: depth in common subjects, science and technology, international relations | UPSC CSAT practice and Mains answer writing |
| March to 22 May 2027 | UPSC Prelims: full tests and revisions | Current affairs revision |
If you clear BPSC or UPPCS Prelims, their Main exams will need time in these months too. Check each Commission’s Mains schedule when it is announced and adjust the plan.
Five rules for three exams in eight months
- Build the common core to UPSC depth. It covers the state papers and saves time later.
- Keep separate notebooks for Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Mixing state facts into general notes makes revision slow.
- Solve each exam’s own previous papers. The style of questions differs even where the syllabus overlaps.
- Never skip CSAT for an exam that has it. Both UPPCS and UPSC remove you below 33%.
- Give each exam its final two to three weeks. In those weeks, practise that exam’s pattern and state content only.
Frequently asked questions
Can I prepare for UPSC, BPSC and UPPCS at the same time?
Yes. Much of the General Studies syllabus overlaps. Prepare the common core once to UPSC depth, then add state-specific content and each exam’s pattern practice before its date.
Which exam should I put first?
The one that comes next, for its final few weeks, while you keep current affairs and CSAT going for the others. Over the next eight months that order is BPSC, UPPCS and then UPSC.
Is BPSC or UPPCS easier than UPSC?
They are different rather than simply easier. The state papers test state-specific knowledge that UPSC does not, while UPSC’s questions tend to be more conceptual. Competition is intense in all three.
Do I need to be from Bihar or Uttar Pradesh to apply?
Candidates from other states can generally apply, but reservation and age relaxation usually apply only to candidates domiciled in the state. Check the eligibility section of each notification.
